David Gushee, columnist and ethicist, has a short article at abpnews.com on the scriptural errors and wrong-headed allegiances that cause some evangelicals to neglect environmental issues. What’s more, he claims that such neglect is hurting the witness of the church, partly because of the way it so often stakes its claims on deliberate mishandling of science.
Christians are called to honor truth, and we need not fear that scientific truth will somehow contradict the truth revealed to us in Jesus. The practical outworking of our faith in daily discipleship demands that we study and understand the natural world, not ignore it or vilify those who study it.
